This wine is sourced from a selection of parcels from 0.5 ha of 16-year-old Shiraz vines within the Faultline block. Planted to a density of 4,700 vines per hectare, the soil in this section of the vineyard contains dark brown and yellow chromosols that are particularly well-drained, more so than other parts of the property.
The fruit was fermented in a large-format, open-top concrete tank. The ferment, with a portion of whole bunches, occurred spontaneously with ambient yeasts and lasted 26 days. Following fermentation, the wine was pressed and racked into French oak puncheons and barriques (12% new) and underwent indigenous malolactic fermentation. The maturation period was 14 months. The wine was bottled without fining.
Engaging and distinctive fruit aromas of juicy blackcurrant and cherry conserve, with salted plum and graphite mineral notes adding savoury interest. The palate displays a deep core and a dense mid-palate, with bold fruit flavours balanced by savoury underpinnings. Graphite-like tannins slide across the palate. The palate finishes with a pure, clean line of fresh red berry compote. Interesting now, it will reveal more with time in the cellar.

Not the first variety one thinks of from Mornington Peninsula, but there are some fine examples and few better than this one. Deep maroon in colour., the nose has appealing notes of dry herbs, cloves, leather, a smoky touch, cherries and black fruits. Supple on the palate, with very fine tannins and serious length. Youthful, but drinking well, and sure to keep doing so for the next seven to eight years. This is a very fine cool climate Shiraz. Like it a lot.

Wheaty, spicy, bacon bones and blackberry. It’s a wine with some zip and spice, distinctly meaty and savoury, some tomato paste here, but also hazelnut and liquorice. The tannin is ripe and gently grainy, and there’s a twist of bitter chocolate and pomegranate in the mix too.Iit’s a wine of distinct personality with a cool climate twist.

The Kooyong vineyard is located on the Mornington Peninsula at Tuerong, on Miocene sedimentary soils. Our wines are made from domain grown, handpicked grapes and aim to manifest terroir: the integration of our geology and soils with the macroclimate of our region, the mesoclimates of the various sites within our vineyard and the weather of the annual grape growing season. Our cultural operations in the vineyard and practices in the winery endeavour to articulate these unique characteristics diligently, respectfully and without artifice.
